Afrikaner nationalism facts for kids
Afrikaner nationalism was a political idea that started in the 1800s in South Africa. It was held by a group of people called the Afrikaners. This idea suggested that Afrikaners were a "chosen people."
It encouraged Afrikaners, who spoke their own language called Afrikaans, to unite. They believed they needed to protect their culture and way of life from outside influences. A historian named T. Dunbar Moodie said that Afrikaner nationalism was like a "civil religion." It mixed together Afrikaner history, their language, and their type of Calvinism (a branch of Christianity).
A very important group that supported this idea was a secret organization called the Broederbond. Another key supporter was the National Party. This party was in charge of South Africa from 1948 to 1994. Other groups that believed in Afrikaner nationalism included the Federation of Afrikaans Cultural Organisations (FAK) and the Institute for Christian National Education.
