The Afuera Islands are a small group of three islands. They are also known as Penguin Island or Dodge Rocks. You can find them near the coast of Graham Land in Antarctica.
These islands are located just north of Challenger Island. They are also right outside the southern entrance to Hughes Bay.
Discovering the Afuera Islands
A French team first mapped these islands. This was during the French Antarctic Expedition from 1908 to 1910. The expedition was led by Jean-Baptiste Charcot.
What's in a Name?
The name 'Afuera' comes from a map made by the Argentine government in 1957. The word "Afuera" means "outer" or "outside" in Spanish. This name likely describes where the islands are located. They are "outside" the main bay entrance.
