Aganonerion is a type of plant. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family, which includes many flowering plants. This plant group was first identified in 1905. There is only one known species in this group, called Aganonerion polymorphum. You can find this plant growing naturally in Indochina, which includes countries like Thailand, Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam.
Aganonerion: The River Leaf Plant
Aganonerion polymorphum is a unique plant. It is the only known species in its group, or "genus." This plant is a perennial herb. This means it lives for more than two years. It has smooth, climbing stems that can grow quite long, from about 1.6 to 4 meters (about 5 to 13 feet).
Leaves and Flowers
The leaves of Aganonerion polymorphum are oval-shaped and smooth. They have short stems and are usually between 2.5 to 10 centimeters (1 to 4 inches) long. They are also 2 to 5 centimeters (0.8 to 2 inches) wide. The tips of the leaves are pointed, while the base is heart-shaped.
The flowers of this plant grow in clusters called "umbels." After the flowers, the plant produces seed pods called "follicles." These pods are long and thin, measuring 8 to 15 centimeters (3 to 6 inches) in length and 5 to 8 millimeters (0.2 to 0.3 inches) in width.
Uses of the Plant
People in Indochina use Aganonerion polymorphum in different ways. It is used for both medicinal purposes and as a food ingredient.
For example, in Vietnam, this plant is a common ingredient in a traditional sour soup called canh chua. In the Vietnamese language, the plant is known as lá giang. This name literally means "river leaf." In Cambodia, people call it by names like /vɔə tʰnɜŋ/ or /kaɔt prɷm/.
