Agathon Meurman (born October 9, 1826, in Kangasala – died January 17, 1909, in Helsinki) was an important Finnish politician and journalist. He played a big role in Finland's history. He was a key person in the Fennoman movement and a leader of the Finnish Party from 1863.

Agathon Meurman: A Finnish Leader

Agathon Meurman was a very important person in Finnish society. He was a leader in the Fennoman movement. This movement worked to make the Finnish language and Finnish culture stronger in Finland. At the time, Swedish was often used more. The Fennomans wanted Finnish to be more important. From 1863, he was a leader of the Finnish Party. He led this party with Yrjö Sakari Yrjö-Koskinen. This political party also worked to promote the Finnish language and national identity.

His Important Books

Agathon Meurman was also a very busy writer. Between 1883 and 1890, he published the first-ever Finnish language encyclopedia. An encyclopedia is a book or set of books that gives information on many different subjects. His encyclopedia was called Sanakirja yleiseen sivistykseen kuuluvia tietoja varten. It was mostly based on a German encyclopedia called Meyers Encyclopedia.

Meurman also wrote several dictionaries. Dictionaries help people understand words and translate them between languages. Here are some of his well-known works:
