Agnes of Aquitaine, Queen of Aragon and Navarre facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Agnes of Aquitaine (born around 1072 – died June 6, 1097) was an important noblewoman from a powerful family in France. She was the daughter of William VIII, Duke of Aquitaine, and his third wife, Hildegarde of Burgundy. Agnes became a queen when she married a future king.

Becoming a Queen

In 1081, when Agnes was still young, she was promised in marriage to Peter I of Aragon and Navarre. This was a common practice among royal families to form alliances. They officially married in 1086 in a city called Jaca.

When Peter became king, Agnes became the queen of two kingdoms: Aragon and Navarre. Her official title was "Queen consort," which means she was the wife of the king. She shared his royal status but did not rule the kingdoms herself.

Family Life and Legacy

Agnes and King Peter had two children together: a son named Peter (who died in 1103) and a daughter named Isabella (who died in 1104). Sadly, both of their children passed away before their father did.

Agnes of Aquitaine died in 1097. After her death, her husband, King Peter, married another woman named Bertha.
