Bertha of Aragon facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bertha of Aragon (born around 1075 – died before 1111) was a queen. She was the wife of the king of Aragon and Navarre. Not much is known about her early life. People think she might have been from Italy because her name, Berta, is an Italian name.

She married Peter I of Aragon in 1097. This was soon after Peter's first wife, Agnes of Aquitaine, passed away. Peter had two children with Agnes: Peter and Isabella. Bertha and King Peter did not have any children together.

King Peter's children, Peter and Isabella, both died by 1104. This meant King Peter needed another child to take over the throne. But Bertha and Peter had no children. King Peter himself died the next year. The crown of Aragon and Navarre then went to Alfonso. Alfonso was King Peter's half-brother.

Bertha received a "dower." This was like a special payment or property for a queen after her husband died. However, Alfonso received all of King Peter's lands. We do not know when or where Bertha died.
