Her Family and Early Life
Agnes was born in 1422. Her father was Adolph I, Duke of Cleves. He was an important ruler in a region called Cleves, which is now part of Germany. Her mother was Marie of Burgundy. Marie was the daughter of John the Fearless, who was the powerful Duke of Burgundy. This meant Agnes came from a very important and influential family.
Marriage to Charles of Viana
In 1439, Agnes married Charles, Prince of Viana. Charles was the son of King John II of Aragon and Queen Blanche I of Navarre. He was the rightful heir to the Kingdom of Navarre. The "Cortes," which was like the parliament or a council of nobles in Navarre, had agreed that Charles should be their next king.
A Kingdom in Dispute
However, things became complicated. Charles's mother, Queen Blanche, died in 1441. After her death, Charles's father, King John II of Aragon, decided to take control of Navarre for himself. He did not let his son Charles become king. This caused a lot of tension and conflict. Agnes and Charles did not have any children together during their marriage.
Her Early Death
Agnes of Cleves died on April 6, 1448. She was only 25 or 26 years old when she passed away. Her death was quite early for someone of her age.
After Agnes died, her husband Charles, Prince of Viana, planned to marry again. He chose Infanta Catherine of Portugal. An "Infanta" is a title given to a princess in Spain or Portugal. However, Charles himself died in 1461 before this new marriage could happen.
