Agoraphobia is a type of anxiety disorder. People with agoraphobia feel very anxious or scared in certain places. These places often include open spaces, crowded areas, or new environments. They might worry about having a panic attack or feeling overwhelmed.

They may be scared of losing control or feeling embarrassed. They also worry about not being able to escape or find help if they need it. The word agoraphobia comes from Greek and means "fear of the marketplace." Often, people with agoraphobia feel safest when they are at home. In severe cases, some people might find it very difficult to leave their homes for a long time.

Doctors can help treat agoraphobia with medication or a type of talk therapy called cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT). While treatment can help many, some people may still struggle.
