A Look Back: Aguazul's History
"La Violencia": A Time of Change
During a period in Colombia called La Violencia, which means "The Violence", Aguazul and much of Casanare were controlled by liberal guerrilla groups. This area was very important politically and militarily. It even declared itself independent for a short time.
Back then, Aguazul was known as Sevilla. It was a key trading spot and one of the few ways to move livestock to sell meat in other parts of the country. Sadly, the city was destroyed by bombs from the Colombian Air Force. It was later rebuilt in the same spot, but on the other side of the river.
Recent Conflicts: Who Controlled the Area?
For a long time, the leftist group Ejército de Liberación Nacional (ELN) controlled this area. Between 1995 and 1998, there was a lot of fighting. Other groups, called paramilitary groups, fought to take control. They eventually succeeded.
The paramilitary group Autodefensas Campesinas de Casanare had its main base nearby. They controlled the area until 2004. Then, another group, the Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia (AUC), took over after a big battle.
Aguazul's Climate
Aguazul has a tropical monsoon climate. This means it has a long rainy season from April to November. There is less rain from December to March.
