Agustín Creevy (born March 15, 1985) is a professional rugby union player from Argentina. He plays as a hooker, which is a key position in rugby. Currently, he plays for Benetton Rugby. He also used to play for the national team of Argentina, known as the Pumas.

Club Career

Agustín started playing rugby at the San Luis rugby club in La Plata, Argentina. In 2005, when he was 20, he played his first international game for Argentina against Japan. Back then, he played as a flanker.

Two years later, in 2007, he signed his first professional contract. He joined Biarritz, a team in France's top rugby league, the Top 14. However, he didn't play much in his first season there.

In his second season at Biarritz, he played very little and had a shoulder injury. While he was recovering, the Argentina coach, Santiago Phelan, suggested he try playing as a hooker instead of a flanker. Agustín asked to leave his contract early in January 2009 so he could go back to Argentina and learn his new position.

After becoming a strong hooker for Argentina in 2010, Agustín joined Clermont, another French team. He was signed as a temporary replacement for an injured player. However, he only played for two minutes during his three months at Clermont.

He then returned to play for the Pampas XV team in 2011. After the Pampas XV had a great season without losing any games, Agustín signed with his third French team, Montpellier.

In August 2020, he signed a one-year contract with London Irish, a team in England's Premiership Rugby. In February 2021, Agustín said he wanted to stay with London Irish and play in the 2023 World Cup. He extended his contract with the club.

In October 2021, Agustín scored tries in four games in a row. He scored against Sale Sharks, Northampton Saints, Leicester Tigers, and Gloucester. Even at 36 years old, he played a lot of minutes and started in many games. He renewed his contract with London Irish again in January 2022.

After London Irish faced problems and was suspended from the Premiership, Agustín joined another Premiership team, Sale Sharks, for the 2023-24 season. He played one year with the Sharks.

On October 2, 2024, Agustín joined the Italian team Benetton Rugby. He played his first game for them in Round 7 of the 2024-25 season against Edinburgh Rugby.

International Career

It was amazing how quickly Agustín adapted to playing hooker. Just a few months after changing positions, he was chosen to play for the Argentina Jaguars in May 2009. He then played in the 2009 Churchill Cup.

Later that year, he was picked for the main Argentina team, known as the Pumas, for the November tests. He became the backup hooker to Mario Ledesma, all within a year of starting his new position.

In 2011, Agustín was chosen to be captain of the Pumas for a warm-up match against the French Barbarians. However, the team struggled with their lineouts and lost the game. He also captained the Pumas against Worcester.

Agustín was part of the Argentina squad for the 2011 Rugby World Cup. He played in all their matches, usually coming off the bench as a substitute.

He is known as a very active hooker who is good at handling the ball. He has great "offloading" skills, which means he can pass the ball well even when being tackled. Because of this, some fans at Montpellier called him "Sonny Bill" Creevy. This nickname comes from Sonny Bill Williams, a famous player from the All Blacks who is known for his amazing offloads.

Agustín was a key player for Argentina in The Rugby Championship. He was the team captain from the 2014 Rugby Championship until the 2018 Rugby Championship.

He also played for Argentina in the 2015 Rugby World Cup and the 2019 Rugby World Cup. In 2016, he returned to Argentina to play for the Jaguares team. He wanted to keep playing for the Pumas.

Agustín played his last game for Argentina against Australia in August 2024 before retiring from international rugby. He holds the record for the most games played for the Pumas, with 110 caps.

Personal life

Agustín Creevy was born in La Plata, Argentina.

In November 2020, Agustín spoke about the passing of Diego Maradona, a famous Argentine football player. He also honored Maradona with his team, London Irish. In a game against Leicester, Agustín wore a special black jersey with the number 10 and Maradona's name on it.

Agustín is also an ambassador for Assist Card, a company that helps travelers.
