Agustín Leonardo was a Spanish painter during the time known as the Baroque period. He was known for his beautiful paintings, especially portraits.
Agustín Leonardo was born in Valencia, a city in Spain. He joined a religious group called the Order of Mercy in Xàtiva. By 1620, he was a brother in the convent (a religious house) of this order located in Puig, which is near Valencia.

Agustín Leonardo's Early Artworks
While at the convent in Puig, Agustín Leonardo painted four large pictures for the sacristy (a room where sacred items are kept). These paintings showed important events:
- Finding the Image of Our Lady at Puig
- Siege and Surrender of Valencia to King James (This painting showed a historical event where King James conquered Valencia.)
- The Battle of the Puig in which St. George fought with Christians (This painting depicted a famous battle where a legendary saint was believed to have helped.)
Moving to Seville and Madrid
After his time in Puig, Agustín Leonardo traveled to Seville. There, in 1624, he painted a work called Christ and the Samarian Woman.
Later, between 1624 and 1625, he was asked to come to Madrid, the capital city. In Madrid, he created two more paintings for the main staircase of the Convent of Mercy.

Agustín Leonardo was especially skilled at painting portraits. A portrait is a painting of a person. He painted a portrait of Gabriel Bocangel, who was a famous poet.
