Ahigal is a small town, also called a municipality, located in the province of Cáceres. This province is part of the Extremadura region in Spain. Ahigal covers an area of about 52 square kilometers. In 2018, around 1,401 people lived there.

What's in a Name? The Origin of Ahigal
Have you ever wondered where a town's name comes from? The name "Ahigal" actually comes from a plant! It's related to the word "figal," which means "fig tree." In some parts of Spain, like Asturias, "Figal" is even used as a family name. Just like in old Latin, the name of the tree is often kept in its feminine form.

A Glimpse into Ahigal's Past
Ahigal has a long history. After an important time called the "old regime" ended, Ahigal became an official town with its own local government. This happened in the Extremadura region. Back in 1842, a count of the population showed that Ahigal, then known as Aigal, had about 250 homes and was home to 1,370 people.
