Ahmad ibn al-Qadi (1552/1553–1616) was a famous Moroccan writer and scholar. His full name was Shihab al-Din abu l-‘Abbas Ahmad ibn Mohammed ibn Mohammed ibn Ahmed ibn Ali ibn 'Abd ar-Rahman ibn Abi'l-'Afiyya al-Miknasi az-Zanati (Arabic: ابن القاضي المكناسي). He was known for writing about many different subjects, like history, biographies, and poetry. Ahmad ibn al-Qadi was one of the most important writers who worked for the ruler Ahmad al-Mansur in Morocco.
About Ahmad ibn al-Qadi
Ahmad ibn al-Qadi was born in the city of Fez in 1552 or 1553. His family was known as the Ibn al-Qadi family. They were a Berber family from the Miknasa tribe, which was part of the Zenata group of tribes. Their ancestor was a tribal chief named Musa ibn Abi al-Afiya. Many members of his family lived in Fez and Meknes. The Ibn al-Qadi family was well-known for having important people. Over the centuries, many family members held high positions in government or religion. They also became famous as Islamic scholars.
What He Wrote
Ahmad ibn al-Qadi wrote many important scholarly books. Two of his most famous works are collections of biographies. These books are very valuable because they provide a lot of information about important people and events.
- Al-Muntaqa al-maqsur 'ala ma'athir al-khilafat Abi al-Abbas al-Mansur: This was his main work. It praised the ruler Ahmad al-Mansur. Ibn al-Qadi wrote about al-Mansur's great qualities, saying they made him the rightful leader of Islam.
- Jadwat al Iqtibas Fi-man halla min al'alam madinata fas (The Torch of learning in the recollection of the most influential notables of the city of Fez): This book is a collection of biographies about important people who lived in the city of Fez.
- Dhīl wafayāt al-'ayān al-musamā<<Durrat al-hidjāl fī asmā’ al-ridjāl>> (ذيل وفيات الأعيان المسمى «درة الحجال فى أسماء الرجال»): This book is an appendix to other obituaries. It adds more information about notable names.
