Ahnberg, South Dakota facts for kids

Ahnberg is a small place in South Dakota, United States. It is known as an unincorporated community. This means it is a group of homes and businesses that does not have its own local government like a city or town.

Where is Ahnberg?

Ahnberg is located in the west-central part of Brookings County. It is about five miles north of Sinai. It is also about 12 miles west of Brookings.

Ahnberg's Past

Ahnberg grew up along a railroad line. This line was once part of the South Dakota Central Railroad. It connected Sioux Falls to Watertown.

Over time, other companies took over the railroad. These included the Great Northern Railroad. Later, it became the Burlington Northern. This company was the last to use the line.

At one point, Ahnberg was a very busy place. It was thought to be the biggest shipping point between Sioux Falls and Watertown. A shipping point is where goods are loaded onto trains to be sent away.

Ahnberg was first called Como. But in 1921, a post office was opened there. A new name was chosen for the community. It was named after Oscar Ahnberg, who was a pioneer farmer living nearby.
