How the Gallery Started
The Grant family started the Aigantighe Art Gallery in 1956. They had moved to Timaru all the way from Scotland. The gallery is located inside a beautiful old mansion.
The Gallery Building
The main building is an old mansion built in 1908. In 1978, more space was added to the mansion. This new part helps show even more art.
An architect named James S. Turnbull designed the original mansion. The building is considered a special historic place by Heritage New Zealand. This means it is an important part of New Zealand's history and is protected.
