History of the Gallery

The Aigantighe Art Gallery was started by the Grant family. They moved to Timaru from Scotland. The gallery first opened in 1956.

The Gallery Building

The main part of the gallery is an old mansion. It was built in 1908. A famous architect named James S. Turnbull designed this building. In 1978, a new section was added. This gave the gallery more space to show off its art.

The mansion is very special. On June 23, 1983, it was recognized as an important historic building. It is now known as a Category II historic place by Heritage New Zealand. This means it is a place with special history and value.
