The Aiken Colored Cemetery, now known as Pine Lawn Memorial Gardens, is a very old and important cemetery in Aiken, South Carolina. It covers almost 10 acres of land. For many years, it was the only place where African-American people in Aiken could be buried.
This cemetery started in 1852, which was before the American Civil War. Many different people were buried here. This includes people who were once enslaved, as well as freedmen (people who gained their freedom). Important business leaders, skilled workers, and even those who were very poor also found their final resting place here.
Today, the cemetery is open to the public. It helps us remember the history and lives of the African-American community in Aiken.
A National Historic Place
The Aiken Colored Cemetery is recognized as a special place in American history. On March 19, 2007, it was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list includes important buildings, sites, and objects that are worth preserving because of their historical meaning. Being on this list helps protect the cemetery and its history for future generations.
