Ailean Maclean facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ailean Maclean (who lived in the 1500s) was a famous Scottish figure. He was the second son of Lachlan Cattanach Maclean. Ailean was also known by his nickname, Ailean nan Sop, which means "Allan o' the Wisp." He got this name because he was known for setting fire to buildings using straw. His stories even appear in a book called Tales of a Grandfather by the famous writer Sir Walter Scott.

Who Was Ailean nan Sop?

Ailean Maclean was an important member of the Clan Maclean. He was the younger brother of Hector Mor Maclean, who was the 12th Chief of the clan. Their parents were Lachlan Cattanach Maclean and his wife, Marian. Ailean first became well-known when his father lived at Cairnburg.

The Legend of Allan's Shelf

Many stories are told about Ailean nan Sop. One of the most famous legends was shared by Sir Walter Scott in his book. However, some parts of Scott's story are not quite accurate when compared to other historical records of the Maclean family.

The legend tells of a time when a beautiful young lady, the daughter of MacNeil of Barra, was visiting Ailean's family at Cairnburg. Ailean was interested in her, but she did not return his feelings.

One day, while Ailean's parents were away, he acted inappropriately towards the young lady. She managed to escape from him and ran towards a cliff edge. Ailean followed her closely. A guard who was on duty nearby saw what was happening. He quickly rushed forward, grabbed the lady with one hand, and with the other, cleverly pushed Ailean over the cliff!

Fortunately for Ailean, he landed on a rocky ledge, which looked like a shelf. He was stuck there until he apologized to the lady and promised to forgive the brave guard who had pushed him. This spot is still known today as Urraigh Ailean nan Sop, which means "Allan na Sop's Shelf."
