About Air Åland
Air Åland was started on January 14, 2005. The company began its flight services on October 29, 2005. Its first route connected Mariehamn (the capital of Åland) with Helsinki, the capital of Finland.
Expanding Routes
On March 13, 2006, Air Åland added a second route. This new route flew between Mariehamn and Stockholm Arlanda Airport in Sweden. This helped more people visit Åland and made travel easier for its residents.
How Air Åland Operated
Since Air Åland didn't have its own planes, it partnered with other airlines. These partner airlines flew the routes for Air Åland. One of its early partners was UAB Nordic Solutions Air Services. They used Saab 340 propeller planes for these flights.
Later, the partner airline changed its name to Avion Express. After that, a Swedish company called Avitrans Nordic handled the flights. Air Åland also worked with NextJet, another Swedish airline, for some of its routes.
Charter Flights
Besides regular flights, Air Åland also offered special charter flights. These are flights that are booked for a specific group or purpose, rather than being part of a regular schedule.
End of Flights
Air Åland stopped its flight operations in 2012. This happened because another airline, Flybe, started flying the Helsinki-Mariehamn route. This change meant Air Åland no longer needed to operate its own flights through partners.
