Ajalpan is a city in the southeastern part of the state of Puebla in Mexico. It is located near the northern border of the neighboring state of Oaxaca. Ajalpan is also the main town, or municipal seat, of the Ajalpan Municipality, which is the area around the city.
This small city is found in a dry valley southeast of Tehuacan. It sits between the towns of Altepexi and Coxcatlan.
What is Ajalpan Known For?
One of the things Ajalpan is famous for is making red clay roofing tiles. These tiles are called 'tejas' in Spanish. Because of this, many people in Ajalpan jokingly say "Ajalpan da las tejas." This means "Ajalpan makes shingles." But when you say it, it sounds a bit like "Ajalpan Dallas, Texas."
The Desert Environment
The area around Ajalpan is quite dry, like a desert. You can find many different kinds of cactus growing there. One common type is the prickly pear. This cactus fruit is called 'tuna' or 'pitajaya'. In the ancient Nahuatl language, it's called nōchtli.
People in Ajalpan gather the prickly pear fruit. They eat the fruit or use its sweet juice to make drinks.
