Ajit Iqbal Singh facts for kids
Ajit Iqbal Singh (born in 1943) is a famous Indian mathematician. She is known for her work in special areas of math called functional analysis and harmonic analysis. These fields help us understand complex functions and patterns.
Singh is a respected member, called a Fellow, of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA). This is India's top group for scientists and engineers. She is also a fellow of the National Academy of Sciences (India) in Allahabad.
Her Education Journey
Ajit Iqbal Singh studied Mathematics at Indraprastha College. She earned her first degree in 1963. Then, she got her master's degree from Delhi University in 1965.
She went on to study at the University of Cambridge in England. In 1969, she earned her PhD in mathematics there. Her PhD paper was about "linear operators," which are special math tools. Her teacher, Frank Smithies, guided her research. Singh was able to study at Cambridge because she received a special scholarship called a Commonwealth Scholar. She attended Newnham College from 1966 to 1969.
Her Career in Mathematics
After getting her master's degree, Singh started teaching right away. She became a teacher at Indraprastha College in Delhi.
When she finished her PhD in Cambridge, she came back to Delhi. She joined Hindu College as a teacher. She continued her research while teaching. In 1974, she became a "reader" (a senior teacher) at Delhi University South Campus. She then became a full professor in 1984 and taught until 2008. Since 2008, she has been a visiting professor at the Indian Statistical Institute, Delhi Centre.
What She Studied
Ajit Iqbal Singh has explored many advanced topics in mathematics. She worked on how "linear operators" behave in certain math spaces. She also studied "topological algebra," which combines algebra with the study of shapes and spaces.
Her research also included "harmonic analysis," which looks at waves and vibrations. She applied this to understand "differential equations," which describe how things change. She also studied "orthogonal polynomials" and the "geometry of vector measures."
Awards and Recognition
Ajit Iqbal Singh has received special honors for her work. Delhi University awarded her the Rai Bahadur Brij Mohan Lal Saheb Memorial Gold Medal. She also received the Ravi Kanta Devi Prize from the university.
