Akaji Maro (麿 赤児, Maro Akaji, born February 23, 1943) is a Japanese artist known for his unique dance style called butoh. He is also a talented theater director and a well-known actor in films and TV shows.
Early Life
Akaji Maro was born in Sakurai, Nara, Japan, in 1943.
A Career in Butoh Dance
In 1972, Akaji Maro started his own dance company called Dairakudakan Temputenshiki (大駱駝艦・天賦典式, The Great Camel Battleship). This company performs butoh, which is a special type of Japanese dance theater. Butoh often involves slow, controlled movements and can be very expressive. His company has become famous all around the world for its unique performances.
Acting in Movies and TV
Besides his dance work, Akaji Maro is also a busy actor. He began his acting career in 1980. Since then, he has appeared in many movies and television series. Some of his notable film roles include Zigeunerweisen (1980), Kikujiro (1999), and Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003). He has also acted in TV shows like Aoi (2000) and Daughter of Lupin (2019–2020).
Personal Life
Akaji Maro has two sons who are also involved in the entertainment industry. His son Tatsushi Ōmori is a film director, and his other son, Nao Ōmori, is an actor.
