Akira Back (born Sung Ook Back in 1974) is a famous Korean-American chef and restaurant owner. He's known for his creative Japanese and Korean food. He has more than 28 restaurants all over the world, including one called Dosa in Seoul that has a special award called a Michelin Star. His cooking mixes old traditions with new ideas, showing his exciting past as a professional snowboarder!

Early Life and Snowboarding

Akira Back was born and grew up in Seoul, Korea. When he was young, he loved baseball. But in 1989, his family moved to the U.S., settling in Aspen, Colorado.

At age 15, Akira started snowboarding and became a professional! He spent seven years competing and even appeared in extreme sports movies. To earn extra money, he worked in local Japanese restaurants. This job made him interested in cooking. He decided to study at the International Culinary School in Colorado.

Becoming a Chef

After his snowboarding career, Akira Back went to culinary school. In 1993, he got his first cooking job at a restaurant called Kenichi in Aspen. He started by preparing sushi. Later, he helped open new Kenichi restaurants in Austin, Texas and Kona, Hawaii.

In 2008, Chef Back opened his own restaurant, Yellowtail Japanese Restaurant & Lounge, in Las Vegas. Some of his famous dishes there include Bigeye Tuna Pizza and Maine Lobster Carpaccio.

A big achievement for Chef Back happened in 2017 when his restaurant Dosa in Seoul earned a Michelin Star. This is a very special award for excellent restaurants. He has continued to open many restaurants around the world under his own name, Akira Back.

Iron Chef Appearance

In 2008, Chef Akira Back was on the TV show Iron Chef America. He competed against another famous chef, Bobby Flay. The episode was called "Flay vs. Back," and the secret ingredient they had to cook with was spinach! Chef Back showed off his creative way of cooking Asian food, which made him even more well-known in the cooking world.
