History of the Museum Building

The building where the museum is located is very old. It was built in the late 1700s. Between 1998 and 2000, the museum building was carefully fixed up. This restoration work was done by the Department of Antiquities in Palestine. They worked with the UNDP, the Greek Orthodox Society, and the Japanese Government.

In April 2002, the museum was damaged during a difficult time in the area. On May 25, 2006, the museum was damaged again. Its main gate was broken, and some old pottery jars, flasks, and office supplies inside were destroyed.

The museum was restored once more in 2014. This time, the French Consulate of Jerusalem helped with the repairs.

How Olive Oil Was Made

The word "Badd" is Arabic. It describes the old-fashioned press used to make olive oil. Imagine a large, flat rock. Olives were placed on this rock. Then, a big, round stone was rolled over them. This heavy stone crushed the olives, squeezing out their oil. Donkeys were often used to turn this large stone.

People used this traditional method for making olive oil for a very long time. It was common until the 20th century. After that, modern machines took over. The al-Badd Museum shows you exactly how this old process worked. The museum also has other interesting items. These include crafts and art made from olive wood.
