Sidi Abu al-Qasim Abd al-Rahman ibn Abd Allah al-Suhayli (Arabic: أبو القاسم السهيلي) was an important Islamic scholar. He was born in 1114 in a place called Suhayl, which is now Fuengirola, Spain. He later moved to Marrakesh, Morocco, where he passed away in 1185. He is known as one of the seven important saints of that city.

Al-Suhayli wrote many books. His writings covered topics like grammar and Islamic law. He is especially famous for his detailed comments on the sira. The sira is a biography of the Prophet Muhammad written by Ibn Hisham.

His Life and Work

Al-Suhayli was a respected scholar in his time. He was invited to Marrakesh around 1182 by the Almohad sultan Abu Yusuf Ya'qub al-Mansur. A sultan is a powerful ruler or king. Al-Suhayli lived in Marrakesh for about three years before his death.

His Writings

Al-Suhayli's most famous work is a seven-volume book. It is called al-Rawḍ al-unuf fī šarḥ al-sīra al-Nabawiyya li-Ibn Hišām. wa-maʿahu al-Sīra al-Nabawiyya. This book is a deep explanation of the Prophet Muhammad's life story. He also wrote al-Taʿrīf wa-al-iʿlām li-mā ubhima min al-Qurʾān min al-asmāʾ wa-al-aʿlām. This book helps explain names and terms in the Qur'an. Some of his works have even been translated into other languages, like German.

His Legacy in Marrakesh

Al-Suhayli's tomb is in a special place in Marrakesh. It is located in a cemetery just outside a gate called Bab er Robb. His tomb is part of a zaouia. A zaouia is a religious building or complex, often including a tomb of a saint. Many people visit his tomb every year. These visitors are called pilgrims.

The cemetery where he is buried is called Bab Ech Charia. It is now surrounded by walls. This area is historically important. It is the place where the Almohad army, led by Abd El Moumen, won a big battle against the Almoravids in 1147.
