Alfred Barks (born June 30, 1936 – died August 25, 2018) was an American baseball player. He played as a first baseman. Al Barks was part of the New York Black Yankees team in 1957.
Al Barks' Baseball Career
Al Barks grew up in Norfolk, Virginia. He went to St. Joseph High School there. After high school, he joined the New York Black Yankees in 1957.
Playing for the Black Yankees
The New York Black Yankees were part of what was known as Negro league baseball. These leagues were important because they allowed African American players to play professional baseball during a time when major leagues were segregated.
The Black Yankees were also a "barnstorming" team. This means they traveled around to different towns. They played exhibition games against local teams or other barnstorming teams. This was a common way for teams to play and earn money back then.
Al Barks played as a first baseman. This position is important for catching throws and making plays at first base. He played for the New York Black Yankees during their 1957 season.
