About Al Wiseman
His Start in Comics
Al Wiseman first worked in advertising. Later, he became an assistant to Hank Ketcham. Ketcham was the creator of Dennis the Menace.
Wiseman then teamed up with writer Fred Toole. They worked together on the Dennis the Menace comic book series. They created stories for the comic books from 1953 through the 1960s.
Creating Characters
Al's granddaughter, Aliza, has shared an interesting fact. She says that Al Wiseman helped create many characters for Dennis the Menace.
He also had his very own comic feature called Punky. You could find Punky inside the Dennis the Menace comic books.
Other Works
Al Wiseman drew covers for a comic called Charley Jones Laugh Book. He also helped with George Crenshaw's comic strip, Belvedere. For a short time, he even helped with the Yogi Bear Sunday comic page.
Besides comics, Wiseman also illustrated children's books. One of his books was We Learn to Play, published in 1954.
A Dennis the Menace story drawn by Wiseman and written by Toole was featured in a special collection. This collection was called The Toon Treasury of Classic Children's Comics. It was put together by Art Spiegelman and Françoise Mouly in 2009.
