History of the Ala Moana Hotel
The Ala Moana Hotel was designed by a company called John Graham & Company. It opened in 1970. At first, it was part of Flagship Hotels. This was the hotel part of American Airlines.
Changes in Name and Owners
In 1972, the hotel's name changed to Ala Moana Americana. This happened when American Airlines bought Americana Hotels. Later, in 1986, the hotel was sold to a Japanese company called Azabu USA. They paid $70 million for it.
Azabu USA spent $31 million to make the hotel look new. They brought in Ramada Renaissance Hotels to manage it. The hotel was then called Ramada Renaissance Ala Moana Hotel.
In 2004, Azabu sold the hotel for $85 million. A company called Crescent Heights bought it. This company develops buildings where people can buy rooms.
Hotel Rooms Become Condos
Crescent Heights sold about 800 of the hotel's 1,154 rooms. These rooms were sold as condominium units. This means people could buy them as their own homes. Each unit sold for about $200,000.
In 2006, Outrigger Hotels started managing the hotel. But the hotel did not change its name to Outrigger. Then, in 2016, Outrigger sold its part of the hotel. The Australia-based Mantra Group bought it for $52.5 million.
Hotel Design and Size
The Ala Moana Hotel is a very tall building. It has 36 floors. The building stands about 396 feet (121 meters) high. It has a total of 1,169 rooms for guests.
In 2006, the Building Industry Association of Hawaii recognized the Ala Moana Hotel. They called it a "Parade of Homes standout." This means its design was considered excellent.
It's important not to confuse this hotel with the Moana Surfrider Hotel. The Moana Surfrider Hotel was built much earlier, about 70 years before the Ala Moana Hotel.
