Alagappa Chettiar Government College of Engineering and Technology, also known as ACGCET-Karaikudi, is a college for engineering in Karaikudi, Tamil Nadu, India. It was started in 1952 and is run by the state government.

The college is "autonomous," which means it has the freedom to create its own courses and rules. It is also part of a special program called TEQIP (Technical Education Quality Improvement Programme), which helps improve engineering education in India.

History of the College

A kind man named Dr. RM. Alagappa Chettiar wanted to help the town of Karaikudi grow. He started a trust to build schools and turn the area into a center for learning.

On July 21, 1952, the college opened with three main subjects: Civil, Mechanical, and Electrical and Electronics Engineering. The first stone for the main building was placed by India's president, Rajendra Prasad, on February 19, 1953.

Over the years, the college grew and added more courses.

  • 1966: The college was given to the government of Tamil Nadu to manage.
  • 1969: A new course, Electronics and Communication Engineering, was added.
  • 1983: The college started offering advanced master's degrees.
  • 1988: A Master's degree in Computer Application (MCA) was introduced.
  • 2001: A Bachelor's degree in Computer Science and Engineering was started.

In 2008, the college was named the best engineering college in Tamil Nadu for the 2006–2007 school year. Today, it is connected with Anna University in Chennai.

Alumni Association

The college has an alumni group called ACCETOSA. "Alumni" are students who have graduated from the college. This group helps former students stay in touch with each other and with the college. The alumni also hold a project contest called Thirann to help current students show off their technical skills.

Getting a Job After College

Many big companies visit the college to hire students for jobs. This is called "campus placement." The college works hard to help students connect with industries. For example, the Civil Engineering students of the 2008 graduating class all got jobs through campus placements. The college has also partnered with companies to give students real-world experience.
