Alamode Island, once called Terra Firma Island, is a fascinating island in Antarctica. It is the biggest and most southeastern of the Terra Firma Islands. This island features tall, rocky cliffs that lead up to a peak of rock and snow. This peak rises about 320 metres (1,050 ft) (1,050 feet) high!
You can find Alamode Island in Marguerite Bay, which is off the west coast of Graham Land. It's a remote and icy place, like much of Antarctica.
Exploring Alamode Island
The first people to visit and study Alamode Island were part of the British Graham Land Expedition. This group was led by John Riddoch Rymill in 1936. They explored the area and made maps of it.
How Alamode Island Got Its Name
The island was given its unique name by the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey. They re-surveyed the island in 1948. They thought the island looked a bit like an "à la mode" dessert. This is a French phrase that means "in the fashion" or "with ice cream." So, they imagined the island looked like a dessert with a scoop of ice cream on top!
