Alan Barrett is a well-known economist in Ireland. He is the Director of the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). He started working at the ESRI in 1994 and became its Director in July 2015. His main research areas are about how people work and earn money (called labour economics) and how populations change (called population economics). He has written many articles and books on these topics.

Alan Barrett's Education

Alan Barrett studied at Trinity College Dublin and earned a degree in Economic and Social Studies in 1989. He then went to Michigan State University in the United States. He received his Master of Arts degree in 1991 and his Ph.D. in 1994 from Michigan State University. His Ph.D. research was about how immigrants affect the job market.

Alan Barrett's Career

After finishing his Ph.D., Alan Barrett joined the ESRI in 1994. Since then, he has published many research papers in important economic journals.

In 1997, he helped write a book about environmental economics. This book looked at how Ireland's tax system could encourage less pollution. It was called The Fiscal System and the Polluter Pays Principle: A Case-study of Ireland. From 2005 to 2010, he also helped write the ESRI's Quarterly Economic Commentary. This report gives updates and predictions about the economy.

Between 2001 and 2003, Alan worked for the Department of Finance. There, he studied how an aging population might affect the country's money over a long time. From 2011 to 2013, he worked on a project called the Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA) at Trinity College Dublin. He was the Project Director for this study, which looks at the lives of older people in Ireland. He was also a member of the Irish Fiscal Advisory Council from 2011 to 2015. This council gives advice to the government about how to manage the country's money.

He was also an editor for some important academic journals. He co-edited the IZA Journal of European Labor Studies from 2012 to 2015. He also started and edited the Policy Section of the Economic and Social Review from 2009 to 2011.

Alan Barrett is a Research Fellow with the Institute for the Study of Labor (IZA) in Germany. He is also an Honorary Fellow of the Society of Actuaries in Ireland. He is a member of the National Expert Advisory Council on Climate Change, which advises on issues related to climate change.

In 2019, he became a member of the Royal Irish Academy. This is a very respected group that promotes learning and research in Ireland.
