NBA Summer League

After college, Alan Williams was not chosen in the 2015 NBA draft. However, he got to play in the 2015 NBA Summer League for the Charlotte Hornets and Houston Rockets. The Summer League is where new players try to show off their skills to NBA teams. He played so well for the Rockets that he was named to the All-NBA Summer League Second Team.

Playing in China (2015–2016)

On July 25, 2015, Alan signed a one-year contract with the Qingdao DoubleStar Eagles in the Chinese Basketball Association. He played in 35 games during the 2015–16 season. In China, he averaged 20.8 points and led the league with 15.4 rebounds per game.

On March 8, 2016, Williams signed a short contract with the Phoenix Suns. He made his NBA debut on March 17. A few days later, he signed a longer deal with the Suns. On April 13, he had his first "double-double" in the NBA. This means he scored double-digit points (14) and had double-digit rebounds (12) in the same game.

In the 2016 NBA Summer League, Alan was the only player to average a double-double. He averaged 11.8 points and 11.2 rebounds, leading the league in rebounds. This earned him a spot on the All-NBA Summer League First Team.

During the 2016–17 season, he had many strong games. On November 18, 2016, he scored 15 points and grabbed 15 rebounds. On February 26, 2017, he scored a career-high 17 points and tied his career high with 15 rebounds. He became one of only 10 NBA players in 19 seasons to have multiple 15-point, 15-rebound games so early in their career. On March 9, he achieved five straight double-doubles coming off the bench. This was a first for any player in Suns history.

In July 2017, Williams re-signed with the Suns. However, he had to miss six months after surgery on his right knee. He returned to play a few games in March 2018. The Suns later released him in July 2018.

Brooklyn and Long Island Nets (2018–2019)

On September 24, 2018, Alan signed a "two-way contract" with the Brooklyn Nets. This type of contract allows a player to split time between an NBA team and its minor league team, the NBA G League affiliate. For Alan, this meant playing for both the Brooklyn Nets and the Long Island Nets. He stayed with the team for the rest of the 2018–19 season.

More International Play (2019–2024)

In 2019, Williams played for Shaanxi Xinda in the Chinese NBL league.

From 2019 to 2022, he played for Lokomotiv Kuban in Russia. In November 2020, he had another knee injury that kept him out for the rest of that season. He returned for the 2021–22 season but left the team in March 2022.

In August 2022, Alan signed with the South East Melbourne Phoenix in Australia. He led the Australian league in rebounding, averaging 9.6 rebounds per game. After the Australian season, he played for the Nagoya Diamond Dolphins in Japan.

Williams returned to the Phoenix for the 2023–24 season. He again led the league in rebounds, averaging 10.9 per game. However, he suffered another knee injury in January 2024, ending his season. He and the Phoenix team then agreed to end his contract.

In June 2024, Williams signed with the Goyang Sono Skygunners in the Korean Basketball League.
