Albeiro Usuriaga López (born June 12, 1966 – died February 11, 2004) was a talented Colombian footballer. He played as a striker, which means he was a forward player who focused on scoring goals.
People often called him El Palomo, which means "The Dove". He played for many different professional teams. His career took him to countries like Colombia, Spain, Argentina, Mexico, Ecuador, Brazil, Paraguay, and Venezuela. He passed away at the age of 37.
Football Club Career
Albeiro Usuriaga first became well-known while playing for Atlético Nacional in Medellín, Colombia. He had a fantastic game in the 1989 Copa Libertadores tournament. He scored four goals in a big 6–0 win against Danubio F.C.
He also scored a goal in the final match against Club Olimpia. Atlético Nacional won that final after a penalty shootout. Famous goalkeeper René Higuita was one of his teammates during this exciting time.
After his time in Spain with CD Málaga and a three-year period with América de Cali, Usuriaga played for many different teams. He often moved between countries to play for various clubs. Some of these teams included Club Atlético Independiente (twice), Club Necaxa, Barcelona Sporting Club, and Santos FC.
In the 1993–94 season, Usuriaga helped Argentina's Independiente win a major tournament called the Clausura. He scored four important goals for the team that season. He continued playing football at different levels until he retired in 2003, when he was 37 years old.
Playing for Colombia
Usuriaga played for the Colombian national team 15 times over three years. Playing for your country is a big honor in football.
He scored his only goal for Colombia during the qualifying games for the 1990 FIFA World Cup. This goal was against Israel and was the only goal scored in both matches played between the two teams. Even though he helped his country qualify, he was not chosen for the final World Cup team in Italy. This was due to some team rules.
His Passing
On February 11, 2004, Albeiro Usuriaga passed away in his hometown of Cali, Colombia. He was 37 years old. He was playing a card game when the event happened. It was later found that he was harmed by individuals connected to a personal matter.
