History of Albemarle Barracks
How the Barracks Started
Albemarle Barracks was built in 1970. It was set up on the land that used to be an airbase called RAF Ouston. An airbase is a place where military planes take off and land.
Early Occupants
In the 1970s, young soldiers learning to be signallers lived here. They were part of the 11 Signal Regiment. Signallers are like the communication experts of the army. Later, in the mid-1980s, the barracks became home to young soldiers training for the infantry. The infantry are soldiers who fight on foot.
Recent Changes
From 1995, the barracks were home to the 39 Regiment Royal Artillery. This group of soldiers stayed there for many years. However, in February 2015, that regiment was disbanded, meaning it was no longer an active unit.
After that, a new group moved in. The 3rd Regiment Royal Horse Artillery came to Albemarle Barracks in 2015. They moved all the way from their old base in Germany.
Runway Use
The old runways at Albemarle Barracks are still used today. The Northumbria Police use them to train their drivers. This helps police officers learn how to drive safely and skillfully. The runways are also used as a stopping point for very important military convoys that travel by road.
