Albert Gustave Bedane (1893–1980) was a brave man who lived in Jersey. This was during the German occupation in World War II. He secretly helped a Jewish woman and other people. He kept them safe from the Nazis, who were trying to capture them.

Who Was Albert Bedane?

Albert Bedane was born in Angers, France, in 1893. He moved to Jersey in 1894 when he was very young. He served in the British Army from 1917 to 1920. In 1921, he officially became a British citizen in Jersey. Albert worked as a masseur or physiotherapist. This means he helped people with their muscles and bodies.

His Courageous Actions

During World War II, Germany took control of Jersey. This was a very dangerous time. Albert Bedane showed great courage. He hid people in his home to protect them. He saved a Jewish woman and others from being caught by the Nazis. His actions were incredibly risky but saved lives.

How He Was Honored

Albert Bedane received many important awards for his bravery.

Recognition from the Soviet Union

In 1966, the Soviet government gave Albert Bedane a gold watch. This was to thank him and other Jersey heroes. They had helped Soviet workers who had escaped from forced labour.

Righteous Among the Nations

On January 4, 2000, Albert Bedane was given a special title. He was recognized as Righteous Among the Nations. This is a very high honor. It is given to non-Jewish people who risked their lives to save Jews during the Holocaust. The Holocaust was a terrible time when millions of Jewish people were killed.

A Plaque in His Honor

There is a special plaque in Saint Helier. It is on Roseville Street, where Albert Bedane lived. The plaque marks the spot where he bravely sheltered people.

South West Heroes

In 2004, the BBC South West asked people to vote for their "South West Heroes." Albert Bedane was one of four people nominated from Jersey. This showed how much he was admired.

British Hero of the Holocaust

In 2010, the British Government also honored Albert Bedane. He was named a British Hero of the Holocaust. This award is given to people who helped save Jewish lives during the Holocaust.
