The Albert Kahn Building is a historic office building in Detroit, Michigan. It is located in the New Center area. The building was finished in 1931. It was first called the New Center Building. In 1980, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This is a list of important places in the United States.
The Fisher brothers built the New Center Building. They were Frederick, Charles, William, Lawrence, Edward, Alfred, and Howard. Albert Kahn designed it. He was a very famous architect. The building is right across from the Fisher Building. Albert Kahn also designed the Fisher Building. Both buildings are connected by an underground tunnel.
The Albert Kahn Building has ten floors. It looks a lot like the Fisher Building. It was first made for offices and shops. Now, it mainly has offices. In 1988, its name changed to the Albert Kahn Building. From 1940 to 1980, a Saks Fifth Avenue store was on the ground floor.
Albert Kahn used fancy materials for the building. The lobby floors are made of polished marble. The elevator doors are made of shiny brass. This shows the high quality of the building.
New Life for the Building
In June 2015, some companies bought the Albert Kahn Building. They also bought the Fisher Building and many parking spaces. They paid $12.2 million for them. The new owners wanted to make the buildings into a "true urban" mixed-use development. This means it would have offices, shops, homes, and fun places all together. This big project could cost $70 million to $80 million.
In June 2018, new groups bought the Albert Kahn Building for $9.5 million. They planned to spend $58 million to change it. Their plan was to create 211 apartments. They also wanted to add more than 75,000 square feet of shops and business spaces. This work was planned to be finished by mid-2020.
