Albert William Thompson (born June 29, 1922 – died December 26, 2004) was an important American politician and judge from the state of Georgia. He made history by being the first African-American in many important roles in Georgia.

Early Life and Education

Albert Thompson served his country during World War II. He was part of the 41st Combat Engineers and helped in battles in North Africa and Europe. After the war, he continued his education.

He earned his first college degree from Savannah State College in 1942. Later, he studied law at Howard University School of Law. In 1951, he achieved a major milestone: he became the first African-American lawyer allowed to practice law in Columbus, Georgia. This was a very important step for civil rights in the area.

A Career in Public Service

Serving in the Georgia House of Representatives

In 1965, Albert Thompson made history again. He was one of the first African-Americans to be elected to the Georgia House of Representatives. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for the state of Georgia. He represented a part of Muscogee County.

His leadership continued to grow. In 1974, he became the first African-American to lead a committee in the Georgia House of Representatives. He chaired the House Special Judiciary Committee, which deals with laws related to the justice system.

Becoming a Judge

Albert Thompson's dedication to justice led him to another pioneering role. In 1980, he was appointed a Superior Court Judge. This made him the first African-American state-appointed judge in Georgia's history. A judge is a person who makes decisions in a court of law.

He continued to serve as a judge until he retired in 1991. At the time of his retirement, he was working as an Administrative Law Judge. Albert Thompson passed away in 2004 and is buried in Riverdale Cemetery in Columbus. His life showed great courage and a strong commitment to public service and equality.
