Alberto Dines (born February 19, 1932 – died May 22, 2018) was an important Brazilian journalist and writer. He was known for his long career in media and for writing many books.

About Alberto Dines

Alberto Dines worked for more than 50 years in journalism. He led many magazines and newspapers in both Brazil and Portugal. He also taught journalism starting in 1963. In 1974, he was a visiting professor at the Columbia University School of Journalism in the United States.

Dines was the main editor of Jornal do Brasil for 12 years. He also helped run the Rio de Janeiro office of Folha de S.Paulo. Later, he was in charge of Grupo Abril in Portugal and started Exame magazine there.

During a time when the government in Brazil controlled what could be published, Dines worked hard to share important news. In 1974, he was fired from Jornal do Brasil. This happened after he published an article that questioned the close relationship between the newspaper's owners and the government of Rio de Janeiro.

Besides his journalism work, Dines wrote over 15 books. One famous book is Death in Paradise, the Tragedy of Stefan Zweig (1981). Another is Fire Links – Antônio José da Silva, the Jew and other stories of the Inquisition in Portugal and Brazil (1992). His book about Stefan Zweig was even made into a movie called Lost Zweig in 2002.

In 1996, Dines started a new and important website called Observatório da Imprensa. This website looked closely at how the media reported news. Later, it became a weekly TV show on TV Brasil and a daily radio show.
