The Albion CX22S was a powerful vehicle used by the British Army during World War II. It was a special type of truck called an artillery tractor. Its main job was to pull very heavy cannons and howitzers.

What Was the Albion CX22S?

The Albion CX22S was designed and built by a company called Albion Motors. They started making it in late 1943. The army needed more heavy trucks to pull their big guns. Another truck, the Scammell Pioneer, wasn't available in enough numbers. So, the CX22S was created to help out.

Pulling Power for Big Guns

In the army, the CX22S was used to tow huge weapons. These included the 155 mm Long Tom, which was a very long-range cannon, and the BL 7.2-inch howitzer, a large gun that fired shells in a high arc. Imagine a truck strong enough to pull something that big!

How It Was Built

The CX22S was based on another truck made by Albion, the CX23N 10-ton truck. It was a wheeled 6x4 truck. This means it had six wheels, and four of them were powered to help it move.

It had a strong 100 bhp (75 kW) six-cylinder inline diesel engine. This engine worked with a four-speed main gearbox and an extra two-speed auxiliary gearbox. This setup gave it plenty of power for tough jobs.

Inside the Truck

The front part of the CX22S, called the cab, had bench seats for two or three people. The back part of the truck was designed to carry more soldiers and equipment. It had bench seats for four people and two more folding seats. There was also space to store tools, other gear, and ammunition for the guns it was pulling.

A special feature of the CX22S was an 8 long tons (8.1 t) winch. This was a powerful pulling machine located under the back of the truck. It helped the crew move the heavy guns into position, even on difficult ground.

Production Numbers

Albion Motors built a total of 532 CX22S artillery tractors. They were produced between November 1943 and June 1945, helping the British Army during the final years of World War II.
