Greyhound racing

The Albion Greyhound Stadium was a special place in Glasgow, Scotland, where people watched greyhound dogs race. It was a popular sports venue for many years.

How the Stadium Started

The Albion Stadium first opened its doors on April 21, 1928. It was built on Broomloan Road in Glasgow. The track was quite large, measuring 457 yards all the way around.

When it first opened, the stadium used a special 'Metro-Vickers Mono-rail' system to move a fake hare for the dogs to chase. Races were held over different distances, like 300, 553, and 725 yards. The Albion Stadium was located very close to other famous sports venues, including Ibrox Stadium and the White City Stadium, Glasgow.

A Look Back at Its History

The stadium was owned by a company called Albion Glasgow Racing Ltd. It was a very popular spot for greyhound racing throughout the 1930s. One of the main events held there was called the Ibrox & Albion Stakes. The stadium also had a sports club for its members.

After World War II, there was a disagreement about how much the stadium was worth for tax purposes. The city thought it was worth a lot more than the stadium management did.

The Albion Greyhound Stadium closed its doors for good on June 23, 1960. After it closed, parts of the land were used for other things. In 1965, some tall apartment buildings called Broomloan Court were built there, but they were later taken down in the 2010s. The remaining grassy areas became a training ground for the nearby Rangers F.C. football team. Today, that area is mostly a large car park used by Rangers F.C.
