Alcheh Island is a small, ice-covered island found in the chilly waters of Antarctica. It's part of a group of islands known as the Biscoe Islands. This island is about 900 meters long (that's almost a kilometer!) and 340 meters wide. Its total surface area is around 21.72 hectares, which is roughly the size of 20 football fields.
Why is it Called Alcheh Island?
This special island is named after a person named Deiana Alcheh. She is a Bulgarian-Argentine architect who helped a lot with building important structures for the Bulgarian research base in Antarctica. Naming the island after her is a way to thank her for her support.
Where is Alcheh Island Located?
Alcheh Island is located at coordinates 66°24′47″S 67°05′30″W / 66.41306°S 67.09167°W. It sits about 1.95 kilometers southeast of Watkins Island. It's also quite close to Irving Island, only 305 meters to its west, and about 500 meters east of St. Brigid Island. British explorers mapped this area in 1976.
