In Greek mythology, Alcmene (pronounced Alk-MEE-nee) was a very important woman. Her name means "strong in wrath." She was the wife of Amphitryon. With him, she had two children, Iphicles and Laonome.
Alcmene is most famous as the mother of the mighty hero Heracles. Heracles' father was the powerful god Zeus. Alcmene was also sometimes called Electryone. This name came from her father, Electryon.

Hesiod said Alcmene was the tallest and most beautiful woman. He also wrote that no other person born of human parents was wiser than her. Her face and dark eyes were said to be as charming as the goddess Aphrodite's.

Alcmene's parents were Electryon and Anaxo. She married Amphitryon. They had children together. However, the king of the gods, Zeus, was also interested in Alcmene. He became the father of her most famous son, Heracles.

- One story says Alcmene died while traveling. She was walking from Argos to Thebes. She passed away in a place called Megara.
- Another story, told by the people of Thebes, is more magical. It says that when Alcmene died, she did not stay human. Instead, she was turned into a stone.
Where She Was Remembered
Alcmene was honored in several places. The ancient writer Pausanias wrote about these honors.
- In Athens, an altar was built for Alcmene. An altar is like a special place for worship. This altar was in an area called the Cynosarges. It was next to altars for other heroes like Heracles, Hebe, and Iolaus.
- Pausanias also mentioned that Alcmene's tomb was located near Megara. A tomb is a place where someone is buried.
