Who Was Aldobrandesca?

Aldobrandesca lived in Siena, Italy, during the 13th and 14th centuries. She became known for her spiritual experiences and her caring nature. She dedicated her life to helping others, especially those in need.

Her Early Life and Choices

When Aldobrandesca was young, her parents arranged a marriage for her. She wasn't sure about it at first, but she grew to love her husband. Sadly, he died when he was still young. They did not have any children.

After her husband's death, Aldobrandesca made a big decision. She chose not to marry again and instead dedicated her life to prayer. She gave away all her belongings to help others. She joined a religious group called the Humiliati. This group was made up of women who worked to help poor and sick people in Italy. Aldobrandesca was very devoted. It was said that she wore a special rough shirt as a way to show her strong commitment to her faith.

Helping the Community

She spent her days caring for the sick and the poor. Towards the end of her life, she even moved into a hospital in Siena. There, she continued to serve others, living a very simple and devoted life. She continued her charitable work every day until she passed away in 1309.
