Learning and Working

Alessandra Iozzi finished her first university degree, called a "laurea," in 1982. She studied at the Sapienza University of Rome. After that, she moved to the University of Chicago in the United States. There, she earned her master's degree in 1985. She then completed her Ph.D. (a very advanced degree) in 1989. Her Ph.D. research was about "Invariant Geometric Structures."

After her studies, she worked as a lecturer at the University of Pennsylvania for two years. She then became a postdoctoral scholar. This means she did advanced research after her Ph.D. She worked at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, California. Later, she was at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. From 1992 to 2000, she was a professor at the University of Maryland, College Park.

In 2000, she visited ETH Zurich as a researcher. She then became a professor at the University of Strasbourg in France. Later, she taught at the University of Basel in Switzerland. In 2006, she returned to ETH Zurich as a senior scientist. She took her current teaching position there in 2008.

Achievements

Alessandra Iozzi was named a Fellow of the American Mathematical Society in 2022. This is a special honor given to top mathematicians. She received this award for her important work in a field called "geometric group theory." This area of math studies shapes and groups using geometry.
