Alex Askew's Political Journey
Alex Askew has run for office several times. Here's a look at his elections.
First Election Attempt (2014)
In 2014, Alex Askew first tried to become a delegate. He ran for the 90th district. He competed in the Democratic primary election. A primary election is when people from the same party vote for who they want to represent them. Alex Askew did not win this primary election. Joe Lindsey won instead.
Winning His First Term (2019)
In 2019, Alex Askew ran again. This time, he ran for the 85th district. The previous delegate, Cheryl Turpin, was leaving to run for a different office.
Alex Askew won the main election against Republican candidate Rocky Holcomb. He received 51.6% of the votes. This meant he became a delegate for the first time. He started his term in January 2020.
A Close Race (2021)
In the 2021 election, Alex Askew ran for re-election. He faced Karen Greenhalgh. It was a very close election. Alex Askew was narrowly defeated.
Because the vote was so close, a recount was done. A recount is when all the votes are counted again to make sure they are correct. The recount confirmed that Karen Greenhalgh won by only 115 votes. Alex Askew accepted the results shortly after. His first term ended in January 2022.
Returning to the House (2023)
Alex Askew ran for the House of Delegates again in 2023. This time, he ran for the 95th district. This district was new due to redistricting. Redistricting is when the lines of election districts are redrawn. This happens to make sure each district has about the same number of people.
In this election, Alex Askew ran unopposed. This means no one else from any party ran against him. He won the election and started his new term on January 10, 2024.
