The 2016 presidential campaign of Bernie Sanders was his effort to become the President of the United States. Sanders was a U.S. Senator from Vermont. Before that, he was a U.S. Representative and the Mayor of Burlington, Vermont.
He officially announced his campaign on May 26, 2015, in Burlington. He had informally announced it a month earlier. Sanders ran as a member of the Democratic Party.
Sanders had thought about running for president for a while. He was known as an Independent politician. However, his ideas often matched those of the Democratic Party. He worked with Democrats in the Senate. On July 26, 2016, Sanders did not win the Democratic nomination. He lost to Hillary Clinton.
