Becoming a Piano Master
Alexander Braginsky began his music journey in Russia. He studied piano at the famous Moscow Conservatory. His teachers were well-known pianists like Alexander Borisovich Goldenweiser and Theodore Gutman.
Moving to a New Home
In the early 1970s, Alexander Braginsky and his wife, Tatiana Remenikova, left Russia. They first lived in the United Kingdom for a few years. Later, they moved to the United States, where they settled down.
Teaching and Performing
Today, Mr. Braginsky teaches piano at two universities in Minnesota: the University of Minnesota, Minneapolis and Hamline University. He works with talented piano students from all over the world.
Besides teaching, he also performs music. He often plays solo concerts or performs with his wife, who is a cellist. He has recorded many famous piano pieces. Some composers, like Stephen Paulus and Libby Larsen, even had him play their new music for the first time.
Piano and Technology
In the late 1980s, Mr. Braginsky found a cool way to mix his piano playing with computer technology. This made his performances even more special.
The Piano-e-Competition
In 2002, Alexander Braginsky started a unique event called the Minnesota International Piano-e-Competition. This competition happens every two years. It uses special Disklavier-Pro pianos made by Yamaha. These pianos can record and play back performances very accurately.
A junior version of the competition was added in 2008 for younger pianists. Many young piano stars from around the world have joined this competition. Some past winners, like Mei-Ting Sun, Jan Lisiecki, and Eric Lu, are now very successful international performers.
Judging and Mentoring
Mr. Braginsky also helps judge other music festivals and competitions worldwide. He has been a judge at events like the International Keyboard Institute/Festival in New York. He also helped at the Beijing International Music Festival/Academy.
Many of his students have won top awards in piano competitions. They have received great praise for their musical skills.
