Alexander Gordon, Lord Rockville (1739 – 13 March 1792) was an important Scottish judge. He was known by his special title, Lord Rockville, which he took from his home.

About Lord Rockville's Life

Alexander Gordon was the youngest son of William Gordon, who was the 2nd Earl of Aberdeen. His mother was Lady Anne, whose father was Alexander Gordon, the 2nd Duke of Gordon.

Alexander became a lawyer, called an "advocate," on August 7, 1759. He worked as a Sheriff for the area of Kirkcudbright from 1764 to 1784. A sheriff back then was a legal officer who helped with justice in a specific region.

In 1784, he was chosen to be a Lord of Session. This was a very important job as a judge in Scotland's highest court. He took the name Lord Rockville after his home in Haddington. Later, in 1788, he became a Senator, which was another high position in the legal system.

Lord Rockville passed away on March 13, 1792. He is buried in St Cuthbert's churchyard in Edinburgh, Scotland. His family's old gravestone is in the north-west part of the churchyard.

Lord Rockville's Family

In 1769, Alexander Gordon married Anne. She was the daughter of William Duff and had been married before to William Dalrymple-Crichton, the 5th Earl of Dumfries.

One of their sons was Sir William Duff-Gordon, 2nd Baronet. He became a Member of Parliament (MP) for Worcester. Lord Rockville died in March 1792. Lady Rockville, his wife, passed away later in 1811.
