He was the first African American to hold the position of lieutenant governor in Mississippi. He left his political role in 1876 due to political changes during the Reconstruction era.

Early Life and Political Start

Alexander Kelso Davis was a lawyer from Tennessee. He moved to Mississippi in 1869. He settled in a place called Noxubee County.

He began his political career in Mississippi. From 1870 to 1873, he served in the Mississippi House of Representatives.

Serving as Lieutenant Governor

In 1874, Alexander Kelso Davis became the Lieutenant Governor of Mississippi. He took over from Ridgley C. Powers. He served in this important role until 1876.

During this time, there were big political changes in Mississippi. The Democratic Party regained control of the state government. They began a process to remove Governor Adelbert Ames. To prevent Davis from becoming governor, they started an impeachment process against him. An impeachment is when a government official is accused of wrongdoing. Alexander Kelso Davis resigned from his position in 1876 because of this.

Life After Politics

After leaving politics, Alexander Kelso Davis became a pastor. He served as a religious leader until his death in 1884.
