Who Was Alexander Livingston?

Alexander Livingston was a Scottish nobleman who lived in the 1600s. He became the 3rd Earl of Callendar, a title that meant he was a powerful and respected person in Scotland.

His Family Background

Alexander was the second son of George Livingston, 3rd Earl of Linlithgow and Lady Elizabeth Lyon. His family was well-known and connected to other important Scottish families.

His older brother was George Livingston, who later became the 4th Earl of Linlithgow. Alexander also had a sister, Lady Henrietta Livingston.

Becoming an Earl

Alexander became the Earl of Callendar after his uncle, Alexander Livingston, 2nd Earl of Callendar, passed away. This title had been passed down through their family. The first Earl of Callendar was an army officer named James Livingston, 1st Earl of Callendar. He was Alexander's great-uncle.

His Own Family

Alexander Livingston married Lady Anne Graham. She was the eldest daughter of James Graham, 2nd Marquess of Montrose. Together, Alexander and Anne had three children:

  • James Livingston: He later inherited his father's title and became the 4th Earl of Callendar. He also became the 5th Earl of Linlithgow. James married Lady Margaret Hay.
  • Lady Harriet Livingston: She never married and passed away in 1738.
  • Lady Mary Livingston: She married James Graham of Airth, who was a judge in Scotland.

Alexander Livingston passed away in December 1692. His son, James, took over his titles. However, James later lost all his titles and lands in 1715/16 due to his actions against the government. This meant the Earl of Callendar title ended with him.
