Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Alexander Montgomerie, 1st Lord Montgomerie (died around 1470) was an important Scottish nobleman and diplomat. He played a big role in Scottish politics and worked to keep peace with England during his time.

Life of a Scottish Nobleman

Alexander Montgomerie was the oldest son of Sir John Montgomerie. His mother was Agnes, whose father was John of Islay, a powerful Lord of the Isles.

In 1425, Alexander was chosen to be part of the King's privy council. This was a group of trusted advisors who helped King James I make important decisions for the country.

He took over his father's lands and titles before November 1429. By August 1430, he was made a governor of Kintyre and Knapdale. He shared this important job with his brother-in-law, Sir Robert Cunningham.

Working for Peace

Alexander Montgomerie was often sent to England to help make peace treaties. In November 1436, he became a commissioner. This meant he was chosen to represent Scotland in talks with England. He helped create a truce, which was a peace agreement, that lasted for nine years.

The English King, Henry VI, even gave him a silver cup as a gift. This showed how important his work was. In 1444, he went to Durham, England, to discuss extending the truce and bringing Scottish hostages home.

Important Roles and Titles

In 1444, Alexander was given another important job. He became the keeper of Brodick Castle on the Isle of Arran. This castle was a key stronghold.

He also supported King James II of Scotland. In 1445, he helped sign documents against powerful lords who had rebelled against the King.

Around 1445, Alexander Montgomerie was given a special new title. He became a lord of parliament, known as Lord Montgomerie. This made him a very important person in the Scottish government.

He continued his work as a diplomat. In 1451, he helped keep another truce with England. He went on several more diplomatic trips to England in the years that followed. Alexander Montgomerie passed away around 1470.

His Family

Alexander Montgomerie and his wife, Margaret, had several children. They had three or four sons and three daughters:

  • Alexander, who was the master of Montgomerie. He was the grandfather of Hugh Montgomerie, 1st Earl of Eglinton.
  • George, who was the ancestor of the Montgomerie family branch from Skelmorlie.
  • Thomas, who was a church leader (parson) and also led the University of Glasgow.
  • John of Giffen (though some historians are not sure about him).
  • Margaret, who married John Stewart, 1st Earl of Lennox.
